How EPIC GAMES got it so right with Fortnite battle royale

As we all know, Fortnite is by far the most popular video game of this year. But why?

There are many reasons why it is so popular and making so much money. First of all, almost 99% off video game producers out a price on their product. War game franchises like Call of Duty or Battlefield retail their products for prices ranging from £40-£100 depending on what is included in the product. Price is obviously a reason effecting game purchases as some people can't afford to spend a lot of money. As the large target audience who play these games are 10-20 years olds, some won't have a spare £50 laying about. This is where Fortnite comes into play. Releasing the more fun game mode they offer (Battle Royale) for free allowed them to reach a much larger audience. Now kids could play the same game with their friends without having to shell out the dosh. However, as a player of Fortnite, i have succumbed to their in-game purchases and spend nearly the same as a rival game costs. This is the way that they draw you in, create amazing things to look at and eventually you will buy them.

It all seems amazing getting such a good game for free but there is a method to this madness. In-game purchasing is what contributes to their financial gain, in February of 2018 they made $126 million. These in-app purchases not only looked really aesthetic with epic dances, player skins etc. but they don't effect the gameplay meaning that people with a lot of disposable income can't just buy everything and win everything. The game was based on people's merits which meant they could have more fun playing as they had an even playing field.

Unlike Fortnite's main competitor (PUBG), the design of the game is very different. PUBG is known as the most realistic game; based on guns, aesthetics and health while Fortnite is almost cartoon as body features are accentuated and you can drink potions that give you extra health. This unique design of game attracted a younger audience as they were used to seeing similar designs on TV.

Another reason for the success is down to the relationship EPIC GAMES has with its fans. They are a very transparent business and tell fans all the things they need to know so that they can plan their gaming times. This can be like announcing when there is scheduled maintenance due, to make sure the game hasn't any bugs or issues. They have also pledged $100 million in prize funds for Fortnite tournaments where pro's would compete against each other for prizes. This is not just a charity donation, they will likely make money out of this as fans gaze upon their idols to win games.

Almost released is Call of Duty Black Ops 4 which rivals Fortnite's battle royals mode, it shows that Fortnite has inspired many games to think differently about how they can be played. Will any other game developers follow in the footsteps and release a game for free or at a very low price? It begs to be seen, but it has given people a lot to think about.
